Ludum Dare 41

Art: No matter what the theme, the art is going to be pixely because that's all I got.
Music: BFXR for sound effects. Need something for music.

Potential Theme Ideas:

Combine 2 incompatible genres (e.g. turn based racing)

Need to decide RIGHT NOW on a resolution.

512x384, only blown up to 1024x768?

512 / 16 = 32 tiles
384 / 16 = 24 tiles

Terrain tiles will be 16x16.

Units are 12x16 (already made)

Buildings will be 48x48...getting the interface onto them might be a bit hard though.

Just start and adjust as necessary. It's not like we can't change the global draw scale.

TITLE SCREEN

ASSETS:

* Font for actual title - TenTown 10
*  Font for instructions - Pinch 7

NAME OF GAME: RED LOVES BLUE (Initially RED VS BLUE so as not to give away the secret - once you play the game once, the V and S separate and L, O and E come in to make the real title.)

This means there's going to have to be a save file.

"The RED and BLUE armies are at it again. As commander of a remote RED outpost, you have just a short amount of time to prepare before the BLUE army arrives.

Click your MINE to harvest the precious Cyberdinium you'll need to produce units, and click your BARRACKS, GRENADE OUTPOST and COMMANDO HUT to produce RIFLEMEN, GREANDIERS and COMMANDOS.

You can also UPGRADE your buildings to click themselves automatically, and to produce stronger units.

The BLUE army will attack from the east in five minutes! Make sure you're ready to take them on!"

Find a good font from Chevy Ray.

RTS MODE

ASSETS:

* Tiles for bare ground and rocks for the terrain
* Sprites for the grenadier, commando and rifleman. Base off of Powermonger and C&C sprite sheets. 8x8. Red and blue versions.
* Sprites for the mine, barracks, grenadier outpost and commando hut.
* Up arrow for upgrades
* Font (again, Chevy Ray) - Pinch 7
* Border (grey, just like the starting dating sim border before it turns pink.)

Had an epiphany last night before bed: use clicker mechanics so people think it's a mashup of clicker/rts when it's actualy a mashup of rts/dating sim.

Four buildings: The mine, the commando hut, barracks, grenadier outpost and commando hut.

All four buildings have two lines of text/buttons on them:

The first line shows your current units per minute, how much CBD it takes to upgrade, and has an up arrow for upgrading.

The second line shows your current unit strength, how much CBD it takes to upgrade, and has an up arrow for upgrading.

The mine only has one line, which shows how much CBD you're getting per minute, how much CBD it takes to upgrade, and an up arrow for upgrading.

The buildings actually produce three units: commandos, riflemen and grenadiers. These are little 8x8 sprites. They mill around, waiting for the BLUE army to show up.

Status bar at top of screen shows icon for unit, number of unit, unit strength (as a x multiplier) and your stocked CBD.

We'll judge the army strength based on rock-paper-scissors, with riflemen beating grenadiers (because of range), grenadiers beating commandos (because they're so tough they take a lot of damage before they die) and commandos beating riflemen (think about how many regular soldiers Arnie and Rambo have killed with impunity).

The fact that the units are actually made SHOULD fool the player into thinking there's actually going to be a war.

Keep the buildings as small as possible in the bottom-left of the screen so the soldiers have a lot of room to mill around. They should just walk around randomly. Maybe hop, since I can't possibly do a walking animation in time?

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the computer is playing the same game and choosing its upgrade fairly randomly.

At the end of the game, we'll compare the number and strength of each unit to the number and strength of the unit it's weak against to determine the winner.

DATING SIM MODE

ASSETS:

* Font - (Slapface font from Chevy Ray) - 13
* Music - (Something upbeat from the generator)
* Commander pic - four versions - angry (<0 relationship), dour (<40 relationship, starting state), neutral (<80 relationship), smiling (100+ relationship) (maybe hearts in eyes at 150?)
*  Gray background
*  Pink/heart background

When the RTS counter finishes (I'm thinking it'll be five minutes) a screen will pop up saying the enemy commander wants to parlay. If the player chooses NO, the game goes straight to the ending state.

If the player chooses YES, another screen comes up. This screen is divided into three sections.

BOTTOM: Status and dialogue (six lines or so, steal console code from Inaria.)

LEFT:  Options and sub-options

RIGHT: View of the BLUE commander. His expression changes based on his disposition towards you.

The screen initially starts with a grey border and then the following text goes into the console:

"OMG, he's SO DREAMY! You totally don't want to fight him, you want to get him to fall in love with you!

<Press Space>

And that would end the war too so...bonus!

<Press Space>

Maybe you can...negotiate a different way!"

<Press Space>

The border then changes to pink with flowers and the following text pops up:

"BLUE Commander: Let us begin this negotiation. I hope we can come to some sort of truce."

The dialogue options then appear.

The dating sim is going to be really simple. There will be five categories, each with three possible responses. Choosing the responses in the right order will raise his "relationship" stat with you to the point where he'll fall in love with you and call off the war.

Five categories:

LOOKS - Compliment him on his looks. These ALL give a boost to relationship, except the third, which he takes as an insult (it should be slightly insulting).
FOOD - Ask him what kind of food he likes. Need 40+ relationship for him to respond, otherwise he claims you're wasting his time. Again, two good, one bad.
BOOKS - Ask him what kind of books he likes. Need 20+ relationship for him to respond, otherwise he claims you're wasting his time. Two good, one bad.
WAR - Ask him what he really thinks about war. Need 60+ relationship for him to respond truthfully, otherwise he'll simply claim it's a necessary evil.
LOVE - Ask him what he thinks about love. Need 80+ relationship for him to respond truthfully, otherwise his relationship will go WAY down. If you've got the relationship, though, this will lead to the Good Ending.

Click a category and three long stretch buttons appear in the selection area, one for each option. Click a button, that text goes into the console (in Pink) and then his response pops up (in Light Blue). The button for that question then disappears. You can change categories at any time.

You can only ask him each thing ONCE. That way you can't just spam all options until you get it right in one go.

The bad options actually become GOOD once you get his relationship up high enough. Since there are 15 options, you can (if you choose perfectly) get his relationship up to 150. Only 100 is necessary to stop the war, getting to 150 gets you a "Perfect Ending" bonus.

LOOKS:

"You look very handsome today."
  Relationship Any - "Thank you. I find that keeping a clean, sharp appearance is necessary to inspire discipline in soldiers." +10 Relationship

"Your eyes are beautiful!"
   Relationship < 40 - "This is a serious negotiation. Are you making fun of me?" -10 Relationship
   Relationship >= 40 - "I...have noticed things about you that I also find attractive." +10 Relationship

"I love that hat!"
  Relationship Any - "Yes, this hat is standard-issue, but I think I wear it well." +10 Relationship

"Do you like doughnuts?"
   Relationship < 40 - "Fattening me with sweets will not help you in these negotiations." -10
   Relationship > 40 < 80 - "No, I hate the things. Sugar and dough, just waiting to turn into fat..." - 10
   Relationship > 80 - "Well...to be honest, I love them! They are my favorite food! I just can't ever find time to eat them any more. Why...do you have one?" +10

BOOKS:
"Have you read 'War and Peace'?"
   Relationship < 40 - "Yes.  Nothing but a simple adventure story." +0
   Relationship > 40 - "Yes, though I haven't read it through in many years." +10

"Have you read 'Watership Down'?"
   Relationship < 60 - "The book about the rabbits? Don't be ridiculous." -10
   Relationship > 60 - "Yes...it's secretly one of my favorite books!" +10

"Do you read Shakespeare?"
   Relationship < 40 - "I've little time for literature." - 10
   Relationship > 40 - "Yes, though to be honest I think he's horribly overrated." +10

WAR:

"Do you think this war is necessary?"
   Relationship < 20 - "This is how you begin a negotiation? We will fight you to the end!" -10
   Relationship < 60 - "Of course it is. The atrocities you REDs committed make it so." 0
   Relationship > 60 - "It would be nice if we could let byegones be byegones. But it is not up to us..." +10

"Do you care about the lives of your soldiers?"
   Relationship < 20 - "Do you care about yours?!" - 20
   Relationship < 60 - "Of course. But war can only end when one side is obliterated." 0
   Relationship > 60 - "Of course. They are like my sons and daughters. But I have my orders..." +10

"What would it take to call a truce?"
   Relationship < 0  - "Your immediate, unconditional surrender." -10
   Relationship < 60 - "A ceasefire might be possible today, but tomorrow the war will go on." 0
   Relationship > 60 - "I find the prospect of going to war against you and your men to be increasingly...unwelcome." + 10

LOVE:

"Commander, have you ever been in love?"
   Relationship < 20 - "This is how you negotiate? With maudlin, hammy manipulation?" - 10
   Relationship < 80 - "Of course, but that is neither here nor there." 0
   Relationship < 100 - "Yes, but it has been many years. The memories have faded." +10
   Relationship > 100 - "Yes...quite recently." +10

"Commander, do you...think I'm your type?" - This question is best asked very last.
   Relationship < 20 - "We are at WAR! What do you think this is, a visual novel?" -10
   Relationship < 80 - "Not really. You don't seem any different from any other RED I've met." 0
   Relationship < 100 - "I...cannot say no. You've been quite polite and welcoming, even showing concern for my soldier's wellbeing." +10
   Relationship > 100 - "I did not think I had a type...until I met you."

"Commander, what do you feel love truly is?"
   Relationship < 20 - "I would LOVE to get this negotiation over so that I can crush you on the battlefield!" -10
   Relationship < 80 - "I don't think that's either here nor there." 0
   Relationship < 100 - "It's more than just infatuation between two people, there must be something real between us...I mean them." +10
   Relationship > 100 - "I feel that love is truly in this room!" + 10

Once all options have been exhausted, the commander says something based on your relationship score:

Relationship < 0 - "It will be a pleasure crushing you RED scum."
Relationship < 20 - "This negotiation was a complete waste of time."
Relationship < 40 - "Your bizarre behavior has made negotiation impossible. Well, I did my duty."
Relationship < 60 - "It is unfortunate we could not come to an agreement."
Relationship < 80 - "I find it unpleasant, but the hostilities must continue."
Relationship < 100 - "I...truly wish there was another way. For us, as well as our armies."
Relationship < 150 - "I cannot send an army against you...you mean too much to me!"
Relationship = 150 - "I have found true love at last...we must end this foolish war!"

ENDING STATE

In the ending state, the two armies are compared.

* If the player refuses to parlay, they get the following text:

ENEMY LARGER:

"Your pathetic army was wiped out. BLUE's strangely charismatic commander stands over the broken remains of your HQ. You have ended the war...in BLUE's favor. Try again."

ARMIES EVEN:

"The clash is brutal, the fighting horrific. When the smoke drifts away, there is no clear victor. The war will go on...and on...and on..."

ENEMY SMALLER:

"Your forces outnumber and outgun the enemy. Many of your soldiers fall, but more of theirs do. You have won this battle, but the war goes on."

This does NOT unlock the alternate title.

* If the player parlayed and lost the dating sim, they get the same messages as above, but they DO unlock the alternate title and the ability to skip straight to the dating sim.

* If the player parlayed and won the dating sim, they get the following text:

ENEMY LARGER:

"Your successful diplomacy has not only gotten you a dinner date, but it's also spared your soldier's lives, since BLUE's army was WAY better than yours. Like, WAY better."

ARMIES EVEN:

"You've sweet-taked the BLUE commander into spending some quality time with you, which is great because the battle would have been an absolute disaster for both sides. I mean, really, there would have been nothing left."

ENEMY SMALLER:

"Not only was the BLUE commander swayed by your honeyed words, but also by the size of your massive...army! So, while it's awesome that the war is over, you're pretty sure that you'd have won."

Evaluating the armies:

Each unit type is evaluated agains the units they are strong against. The value is number * strength - the value of the enemy unit that beats this one.

So for instance

Army 1:
10 commandos at strength 4
10 riflemen at strength 3
10 grenadiers at strength 5

vs

Army 2:
20 commandos at strength 4
5 riflement at strength 3
5 grenadiers at strength 2

Army 1:

Commandos:  10 * 4 = 40 - 5 * 2 = 10 = 30
Riflemen:   10 * 3 = 30 - 20 * 4 = 80 = 0
Grenadiers: 10 * 5 = 50 - 5 * 3 = 15 = 35

Total = 65

Army 2:

Commandos: 20 * 4 = 80 - 10 * 5 = 50 = 30
Riflemen: 5 * 3 = 15 - 10 * 4 = 40 = 0
Grenadiers: 5 * 2 = 10 - 10 * 3 = 30 = 0

Total = 30

I think this will work.

This would be an example of an overwhelming victory :)
